World Hindi Day celebrations in Kandy (Sri Lanka)

Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy celebrated World Hindi Day on 12 January 2021 at Mahaweli Reach Hotel, Kandy. The celebration began with reading out of message of Prime Minister of India on World Hindi Day by Assistant High Commissioner Mr. Raakesh Natraj followed by speeches of Distinguished Guests Mr. Bresil Nagodavithana, Senior lecturer of Hindi language at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and World Hindi Service Awardee & Guest of Honour Dr. Wajira Gunasena, Senior lecturer of Hindi Language at University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

2. This was followed by cultural performances and exchange of ideas to promote Hindi language in Sri Lanka. 40 Hindi professionals, enthusiasts, teachers, and students participated in the event, considering the challenges imposed by CoVID-19 pandemic, the participation was limited, keeping in line with local regulation.

3. In the week preceding to main event, Hindi competitions (speech, poem recitation etc.) were organised via online mode for students of different academic levels. A total of 65 participants from various Universities, colleges and schools took part in these competitions. Several in-house Hindi competitions were also organized for officials and local staff of AHCI Kandy. Winners of various Hindi competitions were awarded with certificates of appreciation as well as cash prizes. The event concluded with a vote of thanks to all participants.
