Special “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)” week celebrations

from 19-25 January 2022

India is completing 75 years of her Independence on 15th August 2022. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Government of India is celebrating “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)” beginning 75 weeks prior to the completion of 75 Years of Indian Independence.

2. Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy celebrated “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)” special week from 19thJanuary, 2022 to 25thJanuary 2022. Following events were organized during the Special AKAM Week.

3. The AKAM Special week celebrations began with the celebration of 17thPravasi Bharatiya Divas, at auditorium of Chancery on 19th January 2022. Indian diaspora leaders, entrepreneurs and prominent people of Indian Origin took part in the celebration. A fruitful interaction took place between Assistant High Commission of India officers and members of the Indian Origin Community.

4. On 20thJanuary 2022, Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy organized a Rangoli Competition at 2ndfloor of Kandy City Center (KCC), Kandy. Mr. Gamini Rajarathna, Chief Secretary of Central Province & Mrs. Indumini Menikdiwela, Assistant Chief Secretary graced the occasion and congratulated the winners & participants. More than 50 youths (consisting of 08 teams) participated in this event and top 03 teams were declared winners.

5. On 21stJanuary 2022, Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Kandy organized a 'Blood Donation Camp' at E. L. Senanayake Children's Library, Kandy. More than 100 volunteers participated in the camp. Mr. Gamini Rajarathna, Chief Secretary of Central Province, Mrs. Dileepa Piyadasa, Deputy Municpal Commissioner and other guests were present during inauguration of the camp.

6. Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy organized ‘Indian Film Festival’ in Central province of Sri Lanka (Kandy, Matale & Nuwara Eliya). In Kandy, films were screened in two sessions (morning and afternoon) at Hindu Cultural Hall Kandy. Prof. M. D. Lamawansa, Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya inaugurated the morning session of Indian Film festival in Kandy. In Matale, film was screened at auditorium of Mahatma Gandhi International Centre, Matale and in Nuwara Eliya at the auditorium of Central Library. Indian cinema lovers enjoyed watching of the Indian films at all 03 places. In total around 1000 people watched the films.

7. On 24thJanuary 2022, An "Awareness Campaign on the Services from AHCI" on Scholarships, Hindi & Fine Arts classes, Visa & OCI related services was organized in virtual mode by Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy. Nearly 100 participants attended the virtual webinar including Mr. Gamini Rajaratne, Chief Secretary of Central Province, Mrs, Shirley Jayawardena, President of Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries Sri Lanka (FCCISL), Mr. Chandana Wickramasooriya, Deputy Chief Secretary of Central Province, professionals, teachers and students.

8. The week long celebrations concluded with felicitating the winners of ‘Rangoli Competition’ and ‘Indian Dance Festival’ on 25thJanuary 2022 at the auditorium of Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy. Top three teams of Rangoli Competition and top five winners of Indian Dance Festival were awarded with cash prizes and certificates. Indian dance festival entries were invited through virtual mode only.
